The Pillai College Campus in Navi Mumbai was filled with exuberance and excitement, as more than 50000 students from all over India thronged to Pillai Group of Institutions’ annual youth festival ‘Alegria 2019’, one of the biggest inter collegiate festivals in India. The festival was conducted in association with Times of India.

The seventh edition of this most popular festival ‘Alegria – The Festival of Joy” held from 5th to 9th February 2019 was spectacular in every aspect with a stupendous line-up of events, creative competitions, innovative workshops, sporting events, music and dance and a long list of celebrity appearances.

 

In line with this year’s theme “Cosmos” the entire Campus transformed itself into a magnificent galaxy from space with creative artwork and installations all around its premises. The festival was inaugurated by eminent personalities from the field of Space Sciences, Dr. Prakash Chauhan, Director, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (ISRO) and Mr. DRM Samudriah, Former Deputy Director of Space Applications Center at a glittering function where the students put up stunning performances to showcase the festival’s theme. In a noteworthy gesture, Dr. Chauhan announced twelve free online courses of ISRO as a bonanza for faculty and students of the Pillai Group.

One of the much awaited events which witnessed a packed audience of over 10000 students was the concert by the band “Ayushmann Bhava” led by the gifted actor and singer Ayushmann Khurrana, his very first in Navi Mumbai, on 6th February 2019. After showcasing concerts of the likes of Farhan Akhtar, Guru Randhawa, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Vishal and Shekhar in the past, Alegria did not disappoint again this year by bringing in such a huge name in the Indian Music Industry. Ayushmann gave the crowd a performance to remember as he sang melodic songs non-stop for 2 hours which included his own chart busting hits such as Paani Da and Saadi Galli.  Another sensational event was the comedy night on 8th February 2019 featuring India’s top comedian Zakir Khan who left the audiences in splits with his entertaining stand-up act. The night also featured the popular comedian Prashasti Singh who also left the audiences roaring with laughter with her comic act.

Alegria is also known for its thrilling student centric competitions that receive huge participation from all over India such as the ‘Mr. and Ms. Alegria’ personality contest, ‘Face of Alegria’ model hunt, ‘Freestyle Solo’ dance competition, ‘Fitness Physique’ competition, ‘Battle of the DJs’, ‘Fashion Show’ and ‘Group Dance’ competitions. The celebrity judges for these events were the versatile film actor Jim Sarbh of the “Padmavat” fame, the beautiful and talented Warina Hussain, lead actress of the film “Loveyatri”, international dancing sensation Lauren Gottlieb, noted bodybuilders Sangram Chougule and Manoj Patil, DJs Shaan and Olly Esse, MTV Reality Stars Divya Agarwal and Varun Sood, actress Shraddha Das, dance group Feel Crew and YouTube star Sonali Bhadauria.

The festival also featured a movie promotion of the Marathi film ‘Ti and Ti’ with star Pushkar Jog and director Mrinal Kulkarni making appearances.

Alegria 2019 ended on a high note with electrifying performances by Mexican and World #68 DJ Mariana Bo and Progressive Brothers on the 9th of February.

Alegria is the brainchild of Mr. Franav Pillai, Deputy CEO of Mahatma Education Society’ Pillai Group of Institutions who commented that “Our emphasis at Mahatma Education Society has always been to provide a holistic development of every child. Speaking about the festival, Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai, Founder and CEO, Pillai Group of Institutions opined that “It is through this mega inter-collegiate festival, Alegria, that students from different colleges of our Campus Viz. Architecture, Engineering, Management   and Degree College get an opportunity to work together and stage an event on such a large scale. Besides exposing students to the practical aspects of conducting such an event, it also fosters leadership skills, team-building abilities and build their overall personality.”
